Audit crystal lattice imperfections. Calculate the equilibrium concentration of Schottky point defects (vacancy pairs) in an ionic crystal as a function of temperature.
A Schottky defect is a stoichiometric point defect consisting of paired anion and cation vacancies. Because defect creation increases the internal entropy of the crystal, a non-zero concentration is thermodynamically favored at any temperature above Absolute Zero. Defect density scales exponentially with temperature.
