Audit the strength of shaft keys and keyways. Calculate both shear and compressive (crushing) stresses to ensure the key can transmit the required torque without failure.
Crushing (compressive) stress is often the limiting factor for softer key materials like brass or aluminum. Ensure this value is below the compressive yield strength of both the key and the shaft.
