This UK take-home pay calculator estimates your net salary for tax year 2026/27. It covers Income Tax (with England/Wales/NI or Scottish rates), Class 1 National Insurance, pension contributions via salary sacrifice (reducing both tax and NI), and student loan repayments for all plans.
With a £40,000 salary in England (5% pension, no student loan): £2,000 goes to pension via salary sacrifice, leaving £38,000 for tax/NI. Personal Allowance £12,570 gives taxable income of £25,430. Income Tax ≈ £5,086. NI is 8% on £25,430 ≈ £2,034. Annual take-home ≈ £30,880.
Your take-home pay is what hits your bank account after all deductions. The effective tax rate shows your total tax burden as a percentage of gross. Marginal rate is what you pay on the next pound earned—this is 60% in England (or 67.5% in Scotland) between £100k–£125k due to the Personal Allowance taper.
Choose Scotland if your main home address is in Scotland (you have an 'S' tax code). Welsh and Northern Irish taxpayers should select England as rates are identical for 2026/27.
Plan 1: English/Welsh courses before Sep 2012, or all Northern Irish loans. Plan 2: English courses Sep 2012–Jul 2023, Welsh from Sep 2012. Plan 4: Scottish students. Plan 5: English courses from Aug 2023. Check your Student Loans Company account if unsure.
With salary sacrifice, your employer reduces your gross salary by your pension contribution before calculating tax and NI. This saves both income tax AND National Insurance. The calculator assumes salary sacrifice—if you have relief at source instead, set pension to 0% and manually add your contribution to the result.
Your Personal Allowance reduces by £1 for every £2 above £100,000. In England, this effectively adds 20% to your 40% rate = 60%. In Scotland, with the 45% Advanced rate, it's 45% + 22.5% = 67.5%. The allowance is fully withdrawn at £125,140.
